Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 August, 2008 : - - A high-flying aerial by Billabong South Africa team rider Warwick 'Wok' Wright features on the cover of the August edition of Zigzag, the country’s largest circulation surfing magazine.
Growing up close to the Golden Mile beaches of Durban, SA’s ‘Surf City’, Wright excelled as a junior competitor, winning numerous age division titles while a teenager. He rose to international surf stardom by capturing the 18-and-under title in the 2002 ISA World Surfing Games in Durban, defeating the likes of current ASP World Tour campaigners Adriano de Souza (BRA) and fellow South African Ricky Basnett (Bluff) on his way to the Gold medal.
Wok achieved his breakthrough victory on the ASP World Qualifying Series early in 2004 when he threaded his way through numerous barrels to clinch the title at the 4-Star rated Hang Loose Pro on the pristine island paradise of Fernando de Noronha off the coast of Brazil. He also picked up R60 000 for his victory in the 2005 Quiksilver Goodwave event, beating all his peers in outstanding waves at his home beach of New Pier in Durban.
Currently rated 46th on the WQS ratings, Wok continues to compete worldwide in his quest to qualify for the ASP Dream Tour. The dynamic cover shot was taken on a boat trip in Indonesia by Greg Ewing.
